This book is just so great。 We've read it several times over the years and it holds up over time。 The first time we read it my son was two。 This time he is 7。 He sometimes puts up a wall against reading picture books because he thinks he's outgrown them。 Not true! This one proves it。 It has lovely illustrations that definitely show their age (2000) but it just gives it a nostalgic feel that parent's won't mind and kids don't notice。 Lovely Halloween book! This book was about a kid who carved a pumpkin and when Halloween was over he put it in the garden。 After awhile the pumpkin started to rot so the kid kicked dirt over the rotting pumpkin。 This started to grow more pumpkins because of the seeds。 The kid gave some of the pumpkins he grew to his friends。
Bella,
Cute book

This a perfect story for the fall and Halloween nights。 Tim, the main character carved a fierce and funny smile into a pumpkin and named it Jack。 Tim loved the way Jack would dance in the dark and fill the air with what smelled like airy pumpkin and fall。 After Halloween, Tim's mom noticed that pumpkin Jack was rotting。 Mother wanted to throw it out, but Tim thought it would be best Jack be kept in the old ghostly garden instead of the trash。 Overtime, pumpkin Jack started to wrinkle, grow mold, This a perfect story for the fall and Halloween nights。 Tim, the main character carved a fierce and funny smile into a pumpkin and named it Jack。 Tim loved the way Jack would dance in the dark and fill the air with what smelled like airy pumpkin and fall。 After Halloween, Tim's mom noticed that pumpkin Jack was rotting。 Mother wanted to throw it out, but Tim thought it would be best Jack be kept in the old ghostly garden instead of the trash。 Overtime, pumpkin Jack started to wrinkle, grow mold, and was eventually hidden under snow when the cold days came。 Once spring hit, Tim noticed Jack's stem and seeds。 So, Tim decided to cover it with soil。 Eventually, a plant started growing where Tim had hid the seeds。 The garden grew and grew with plants and pumpkins。 Because the garden was so generous to Tim, he decided to also be generous and give them away, all but one。 He kept one for himself, and carved the same fierce and funny smile Jack had and Tim was so pleased。 。。。more
Keith,
After Halloween I take our jack-o-lanterns out to an old stump and watch them turn back to soil。 Nice story and nice art。
Simone,
Pumpkin Jack was read to us as one of two examples of ‘holiday’ books。 This book doesn’t specifically have to do with Halloween but more so focused on the weather and seasons。 I think this book will be good to read to a class because it doesn’t force anyone to dress up or any other Halloween traditions。 It shows composting and how a plant can grow back which is something you can use to explain science as well。 Overall, 4/5 for nice illustration and overall theme!
Dustyn Mckenney,
A story about a boy who carved his first pumpkin, and watches it change。 A fun story for the changing of seasons, as well as the circle of life。
Heather,
I liked this more than I expected to from the cover and that it is categorized as a Halloween book - not one of my favorite holidays。 But given that this book has little to nothing to do with trick-or-treating or costumes and is mainly about the life cycle of a carved pumpkin, I would read this again with my girls。 At age 5, I think my daughter has an adequate knowledge of gardening to be interested in this story but not so much that she was bored by it。
Lisa Baker,
This was a really fun book that looks at the life cycle of pumpkins through the eyes of a boy with a Jack-o-lantern named Jack。 It is told through a story, following the boy through the year after Halloween。 The writing was simple enough for my 4-year-olds to follow the science of the changes in the pumpkin, and the story was engaging。 I loved how it began with the pumpkin - something a young child can relate to and touch - and followed it as it decayed into skin and seeds, then showed how the s This was a really fun book that looks at the life cycle of pumpkins through the eyes of a boy with a Jack-o-lantern named Jack。 It is told through a story, following the boy through the year after Halloween。 The writing was simple enough for my 4-year-olds to follow the science of the changes in the pumpkin, and the story was engaging。 I loved how it began with the pumpkin - something a young child can relate to and touch - and followed it as it decayed into skin and seeds, then showed how the seeds grew。 I highly recommend this book! 。。。more

A Book for Fall or Spring! This is an enjoyable book for grades 1- 2。 。。 The Kindle format makes it a great read aloud option for the virtual classroom。
Heather,
Great for young readers to learn the life cycle of a plant。
Chloe Callow,
I liked this story and how it showed the life cycle of a pumpkin。 It teaches kids the lessons of patience and generosity since the boy has to wait a year for his pumpkin to grow new pumpkins and he gives these pumpkins away to his classmates。 Additionally, the illustrations in this book were beautiful。
Michael Dillon,
AdorableCute story, and A cute way to explain how pumpkins grow too! My 4, 7, and 9 year old loved it!

I absolutely love sharing this book with my first graders。 I use it when we are learning about the life cycle of a pumpkin。 Not only does this book offer information about the life cycle itself, it tells a wonderful story of a boy and his friend Jack the pumpkin。 Students are enthralled with this book。
